Understanding the axis in relation to the Colgada

Everything in a colgada is to do with axis and how we are using it.  When two tango dancers are in embrace the axis sits between them. If one of the dancers were to move from this position it would effect the other and pull them 'off axis'.

If however, the second dancer moved with equal force (weight) in the opposite direction the axis would remain in the same location, directly between them. To acheive a Colgada the Leader must control the engery, weight and velocity of the Follower as he sends her in the opposite direction to his mass.

Using the direction of travel.

At first, attempting a colgada is done in stages as we need to build confidence in both the mechanics and trust in each other as leader and follower. 

An easy way to creating the opposing energy required is to create a direction of travel (a step sideways) and allow the follower to continue in that direction (only a small amount at first) while opposing it equally in the opposite direction.

This will require a strong understanding of how to use your frame to allow your follower to release from you and express their weight as an opposing force. Remember, this requires a follower to give their weight to you. This can be a very difficult thing for followers to allow as the ramifications for failing to control the Colgada may be less than good. Look to buld trust with your follower by leading similar techniques but without the opposing force.
